A POWERFUL PAIR OF PAINTINGS FROM THE SCHOOL OF PAUL de VOS

A TIGRESS PROTECTING HER SUCKLING CUBS FROM A SERPENT & A LION AND TIGER OPPOSED

Oil on canvas

Flanders, circa 1700

Paul de Vos (1591–2 or 9 Dec 1595; d Antwerp, 30 June 1678) worked in the circles of Rubens and Snyders, collaborating with both in the painting of animals; a subject at which de Vos excelled to such an extent that Rubens used him to paint the beasts in his Diana Hunting at the Torre de la Parada.

CONDITION REPORT
THIS REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY AN INDEPENDENT RESTORER
Both paintings have new stretchers and recent linings and as such have a good tension and remain structurally stable.
In natural light, the varnish on each appears freshly applied though rather scuffed and scratched, thus appearing a little unsaturating in places. From a normal viewing distance there is no obvious restoration visible to the naked eye. However, on closer inspection, one can see some rather turbid restoration around the edges and in the background of each painting, applied, it is suspected, to conceal abrasion of the paint layer. Both paintings remain well preserved, in spite of the abrasion, with all detail and colour intact.
Ultra-violet fluorescence examination reveals that below the recently applied varnish there remains a patchy degraded varnish on each painting. One can see scattered recent restoration in the shadows, background and around the edges in each case.

Please note that the present pair is sold unframed.
