A MAGNIFICENTLY CARVED MID-NINETEENTH CENTURY POLLARD OAK EXTENDING DINING TABLE

THE RICHLY FIGURED AND COLOURED TOP WITH GADROON MOULDED EDGE INTERSPERSED WITH ACANTHUS MOTIFS ON SIX MASSIVE CABRIOLE LEGS WITH LIONS PAW FEET AND SCROLLS TO THE TOP AND BOTTOM

English, circa 1850

Dimensions: 178” (452 cm) long fully extended
66½” (169 cm) wide
30” (76 cm) high

An exceptionally example of the unrestrained strength that only the best furniture makers in any particular age are able to manifest in wood; this piece must surely have been commissioned as a statement of very great wealth and power. Unusually it has no markings of the maker, except for the patent plate on the winding mechanism, though it seems to take elements from the designs of George Smith and from the Scottish cabinetmaker William Trotter, it is a truly accomplished work by an individual who knew and subscribed to the best pattern books of the day.

Further research is being undertaken.
